Conference on December 10th, 2010, Prof. Dr. Valquíria Padilha, Universidade de São Paulo (USP)
The conference was about "Substantial Emotions: Rethinking Emotional Labor from Social Materiality Perspective".
See the abstract for more information: This paper seeks to rethink the concept of Emotional Labor (EL) by exploring its sociomaterial aspects. Emotional Labor has been usually studied considering rules, feelings, task descriptions, and social relations from immaterial understanding. Based on theoretical and empirical ground, we develop and propose a sociomaterial perspective of EL. Empirically; we get inspiration from the experience of cleaner worker in shopping mall that deal daily with substances such as trash and dirt through specific tools, cloth and architectural arrangements. Cleaner workers? Experience reveals that EL is also a matter of physicality. Implications for further research are formulated and suggested.
